LAFAYETTE – In an effort to slow down Lafayette Jefferson’s up-tempo offense, first-year Harrison coach Clay Hanna employed a 3-2 zone defense against the Bronchos in its opening round contest of the fourth-annual J&C Hoops Classic from McCutcheon High School on Nov. 18.

The strategy didn’t work, as Lafayette Jeff torched the Raiders zone defense by connecting on 13-three pointers during an 87-44 romp over Harrison.

Charae Richardson and Breanna Calloway did most of the Bronchos damage from behind the arc, combining to make a total of nine three-pointers.

The senior Richardson, who hit four three’s against Harrison, led the Bronchos in scoring with 32 points. Calloway, a sophomore, came off the bench to contribute five three-pointers and 23 points in the blowout victory.

The game was never in doubt, as Lafayette Jefferson raced out to a 22-3 first quarter advantage. The Bronchos then increased their lead in each subsequent quarter, outscoring their Tippecanoe County and Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals by margins of five points, eight points, and eleven points during the final three periods.

With the win, the Bronchos (1-1) earned a spot in Friday’s J&C Hoops Classic semifinals where they will take on West Lafayette at 7:30 P.M., a 62-58 winner over Lafayette Central Catholic. Lafayette Jeff has never played for the championship of the eight team event which is contested annually in Tippecanoe County the week before Thanksgiving.

Harrison (0-2) will play in the consolation bracket of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 P.M against Central Catholic.  Seniors Ashley Courtney and Jacklyn Williams each contributed 11 points apiece to lead the Raiders in scoring against the Bronchos.
