Staff Report
One HCC team
silenced its doubters and another disappointed its believers. That is the theme
from sectional action over the weekend. Avon, which has been dismissed as being
“down” all season, rumbled to the title in the Pike Sectional. The Orioles lost
just one set in the tournament. They began by blitzing a Pike squad many
thought would give them trouble in the opening round. Avon won that match in
straight sets. They then ousted conference foe Brownsburg in the semi-finals in
four sets. The championship match was a three set drubbing of Indianapolis Ben
Davis. The championship scores were 25-15, 25-22, and 25-19.
At the other
end of the spectrum, Hamilton Southeastern’s season came to an unexpected end
in the championship match of the Zionsville Sectional. The once beaten Royals
were upset by Carmel in three sets 25-23, 25-19, and excruciatingly 31-29.
Harrison
captured the other sectional title claimed by the HCC. The Raiders downed
conference foe McCucheon in the semi-finals and then dispatched Logansport in
the championship match 25-23, 25-14, and 25-15.
Regional
play will find Harrison opening play at Muncie Central versus Carroll of Fort Wayne.
Muncie Central sits in the other bracket at that tournament. Meanwhile, Avon
will face Warren Central in the first round of the Perry Meridian Regional.
Carmel and Center grove will vie in the opposite bracket.
