WEST LAFAYETTE – On December 28th the third-annual Harrison Endurance Invitational was held at the Purdue University Aquatic Center.  And for the second time in three years, Brownsburg’s boys swim team won the title, edging second place West Lafayette 396 to 353. 

The McCutcheon Mavericks finished third with 325 points.  Lafayette Jeff was 5th with 249 points, followed by Harrison (West Lafayette) with 221 points.

The meet which had no diving competition, featured 6 events with longer distances than the swimmers are used to swimming during a regular high school meet.

However, Brownsburg adapted nicely to the longer distances recording four victories to go along with 13 top five finishes.

“We had some really fast swims which is promising,” said Brownsburg coach Josh Saylor. “It’s also kind of nice to do well in a non-traditional meet like this because you know 50’s and 100’s are different from 100’s and 200’s.”

Claiming first place finishes for the Bulldogs were: the 400 yard medley relay team (comprised of Aric Franzman, Nick Fox, Luke Haynes, and Matt Minkner), Franzman in both the 200 yard butterfly and 200 yard backstroke, and the 400 yard freestyle relay team (comprised of Haynes, Andrew Voiles, Eric Waggoner, and Franzman).

Franzman’s time of 2:03.29 in the 200 yard backstroke broke his own meet record by over two seconds.

In addition to Franzman, West Layette’s Raymond Mahon and Seeger’s Casey Schroeder also won two individual events. 

Mahon set new meet records in both the 200 and 1000 yard freestyle events.  He came from behind to defeat Frankfort’s Alexander Snyder in the 200 yard free with a new record time of 1:48.80.  Then in the 1000 yard freestyle, he became the event’s first ever swimmer to record a sub ten-minute swim with a time of 9:55.74.

Seeger’s Schroeder won both of the sprint freestyle races.  He recorded a winning time of 22.46 in the 50 yard freestyle and then backed that up with a victory in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 50.94.

WEST LAFAYETTE – The third annual Harrison Endurance Invitational held December 28th at Purdue’s Aquatic Center ended the same way the previous two did with the Brownsburg Bulldogs capturing the title.

The Brownsburg Girls Swim team recorded two wins and 17 top-five finishes in this non-traditional swim meet to outdistance runner-up McCutcheon 471 to 348.  No. 30 Lafayette Jeff came home third with 338 points and #16 Harrison (West Lafayette) finished fifth with 234 points.  

The meet featured six events with distances longer than swimmers normally compete during a regular high school meet, hence the name “Endurance” Invitational.  In addition, diving was not a part of the 11 event meet.

The two wins for the victorious Bulldogs came in the 50 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay.  Senior Valerie Jones set a new meet record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.48; and the team of Jones, Molly Birrer, Kaylin Kennedy, and Claire Partlow won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.77.

Brownsburg coach Josh Saylor was pleased his team took full advantage of a rare non-practice day during the Holiday break.

“It’s a nice little break in the Christmas training period,” said Saylor referring to the meet.  “Anytime you don’t have to do two practices a day, it’s a good day.  To come-up here and swim a meet, the kids get to race a little bit, have some fun.  If they swim fast that’s a bonus, and we actually had a lot of really good swims.”

Two swimmers won more than one individual event at the meet.  Harrison senior Jenny Connolly won both the 200 yard butterfly and the 200 yard backstroke; and McCutcheon freshman Megan Gallagher was victorious in the 1000 yard freestyle and the 200 yard breaststroke.

Connolly, who is the defending state champion in both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard backstroke, broke her own meet record in the 200 yard butterfly by just under a second with a time of 2:06.38. 

Meanwhile, Gallagher had an outstanding afternoon of swimming, breaking two meet records.  She swam a time of 10:40.29 in the 1000 yard freestyle, smashing the previous record by 13 seconds.  Then she came back a short-time later and edged out Central Catholic’s Jenna Willis in the 200 yard breaststroke with a new record time of 2:29.16.  Willis had held the event’s previous record, swimming a time of 2:30.92 in 2005.

AVON – Host Avon entered Saturday’s (Dec. 15) ballgame against Lafayette Jefferson at the “O”rena, appearing to have most of the advantages on its side.

For starters, the Orioles entered the game with a four game winning streak.  Meanwhile, the Bronchos were riding a three game losing streak.  Secondly, Lafayette Jeff had made the hour trip in some very snowy conditions.  And finally, the game was moved up an hour from its original 12:30 P.M. starting time to allow the Bronchos to return home earlier due to the snowstorm.

Well, as Chris Berman of ESPN fame says, that’s why they play the game!

Lafayette Jeff’s Lacey Roberts scored the game’s first eight points, and the Bronchos never trailed en route to a 41-27 Hoosier Crossroads Conference road victory.  Roberts, a senior, began the game averaging about five points.  She ended the game, leading all scorers with 14 points.

“We came out in the ballgame and I felt like put the game away right away, just with our attitude,” said Jeff coach Jan Conner.  “I was kind of worried because I didn’t think we warmed up well.  We changed our routine playing early.  I’ve been hugging a lot of kids in the locker-room.  We had some kids really step up and play.”

Lafayette Jeff, which led 20-14 at half, went on a 14-0 run to start the second half to break-open the game.  The Bronchos held the Orioles to just one third-quarter point, and led 36-15 after 24 minutes of play.

“Our defense won this game today,” said Conner.

And the numbers would seem to support the coach’s claim.

Avon guard Nikki Schmidt and center Katie Griffin had combined to score 36 of their team’s 58 points in an overtime win against Westfield just two days earlier.  However, against Jeff, the two were held to a total of four points.  The Bronchos also forced Avon to commit 20 turnovers.

Conner credited freshman guard Kayla McCall as the main reason Schmidt was held in check.  “All we said was, don’t let her (Schmidt) reverse around you.  Kayla did a great job,” said Conner.

Lafayette Jeff, which improved to 4-6 (2-2 HCC), will host conference and County rival McCutcheon in its next game on December 21st.  The Bronchos defeated the Mavericks 64-48 on November 17th as part of the J&C Hoops Classic.

Avon, which got a team high 11 points from Butler signee Kaley May, dropped to 6-4 (3-2 HCC) with the loss.  The Orioles will return to the court on December 27th when they take-on Warren Central in the Decatur Central Invitational.

LAFAYETTE – A record that had stood for 17 years fell Thursday night (Dec. 13) at McCutcheon High School as the Mavericks defeated Lafayette Jeff in swimming and diving.  The McCutcheon boys’ team defeated the Bronchos 129-57 and their girls’ team also won lopsidedly by a score of 117-68.

Megan Gallagher set a McCutcheon girls school record with a time of 5:16.89 in the 500 yard freestyle event.  The previous record had stood since 1990.  She also placed first in the 200 yard freestyle race (2:02.85).  Then she helped two relay teams to first-place finishes (senior Kay Lee Robbins, sophomore Nicole Clark, sophomore Sarah Ritter, and Gallagher 1:49.34) in the 200 yard freestyle relay and (Robbins, Ritter, Gallagher, and senior Claire Oppy 3:57.74) in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Lafayette Jeff had three victories in a row late in the meet, but it was too little, too late.  Senior Sarah Plumlee won the girls 100 yard backstroke (1:05.51), followed by senior Ben Russell’s victory in the boys 100 yard backstroke (1:00.12).  Sophomore Claire Browning then won the 100 yard breaststroke for Lafayette Jeff (1:16.59).

    The Bronchos did not have their entire squad of girls available, and McCutcheon took full advantage.  The Mavericks won both girls and boys diving (sophomore Maegan Webster 155.45 and junior Tyler Phillippo 190.40).  McCutcheon won the last event of the evening, the boys 400 yard relay, in comeback fashion (junior Wesley Hartman, sophomore Clay Oppy, freshman Alex Rhoda, and senior Will Robbins 3:43.59).  Robbins was cheered on to take a come-from-behind win.  The loud cheers from McCutcheon fans were an apt ending to a swim meet McCutcheon won easily.

NOBLESVILLE – The Noblesville swim team took full advantage of the 40 points awarded to a winning relay team at the Noblesville Invitational on Saturday December 8th.

Check this out, the Millers collected 120 of their 407 points by sweeping all three relays, to beat second place Terre Haute North by 71 points.  Richmond came in third, followed by Lafayette Jefferson and Harrison of West Lafayette.

It should be noted though, that Terre Haute North was disqualified in the 200 yard medley relay, nullifying a first place finish for the Patriots.

In addition to winning the three relays, depth was also a big key for Noblesville, posting 15 top five finishes.

“We lost six very good seniors and probably about 60 percent of scoring left us last year,”said Noblesville coach Rich Wolfred.  “We’ve got a good group of freshmen, and the boys who are returning lettermen are doing great.  I can’t be more pleased with these guys this time of year.” 

Senior Joe Welklin, who was a triple winner, was the only Miller to win an individual event at the meet.  In fact, he tied Lafayette Jeff senior Logan Falley for first place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time 1:50.14.  Welkin’s other two victories came in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays.

Ben Grieshop, C.J.  Howard, Mike Reichert, and Austin Smith were all double winners for Noblesville.  They each participated on two winning relay teams.

Lafayette Jefferson senior Ben Russell and Terre Haute North junior John Craig Huster each won two individual events at the meet. 

Russell won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.27, and then later captured the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.98. 

Huster won the 50 yard freestyle by two-hundredths of a second, in a time of 23.15.  He also took first place in the 100 yard backstroke with a wining time of 56.54.

Anderson junior Andrew Gray took first place in the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 311.75.

NOBLESVILLE – Two snowfalls this past week forced Noblesville High School officials to delay the start of school on a couple of occasions.  Thus, head coach Rich Wolfred used the opportunities to conduct several longer than usual morning practices, 3 and a half hours to be precise.
 
Well evidentially, the extra work paid off, as #14 Noblesville won 6 of 12 events to easily capture its own invitational on Saturday December 8th.

Lead by triple winners Nora Brolsma and Mandy Mauck, the Millers recorded a total of 19 top five finishes in the meet to out-distance second place Lafayette Jefferson by 153 points, 479 to 326.  Richmond and Terre Haute North each tied for third with a score of 305.50.  #15 Harrison of West Lafayette finished 5th with a total score of 265.50.

In addition, Noblesville also recorded 1-2 sweeps in both the 100 yard freestyle and 1 meter diving competitions.  Senior Mandy Mauk won the 100 yard freestyle, with freshman teammate Marley Cripe finishing second.  Sophomore Megan Potee won the diving competition by 16 points over her freshman teammate Katie Bittner.

“This is our 5th meet in 14 days, so they’re really tired,” said Noblesville coach Rich Wolfred.  “Overall we didn’t have a lot of best times, but obviously they competed and won the meet.  That’s the main goal this time of year, to win these kinds of meets.”

Harrison senior Jenny Connolly and Lafayette Jefferson senior Arrika Bales were the only girls’ swimmers to win two individual events at the Noblesville Invitational. 

Connolly, who is the defending state champion in both the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard butterfly, won both distance freestyle races.  Her winning time in the 200 yard freestyle was 1:53.57, and she won the 500 yard freestyle in a time of 5:07.09.

Bales won the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 2:15.77, and then later won the 100 yard butterfly in 1:01.41.
