Girls Basketball: 4A Lafayette Jeff Romps over 1A Clinton Prairie

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Frankfort – Clinton Prairie scored on its first possession of the game against Lafayette Jeff on January 29th to take a 3-2 lead.  However, it was all downhill from there as the visiting Bronchos scored the final 23 points of the opening quarter en route to a 71-28 thumping of the 1A Gophers.

The start of the game was delayed a by a half an hour due to weather and it wasn’t because of snow.  Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area and Clinton Prairie officials were forced to evacuate the gym when the school’s alarm sirens were triggered by local emergency management.

When the game finally commenced Jeff’s two standout guards, the Richardson cousins, felt quite at home.  Brandi and Charae Richardson combined to score 13 of the team’s 25 first-quarter points, as the Bronchos built an insurmountable 25-3 lead.  Seniors Lacey Roberts and Tara Perigo combined to score Jeff’s other 12 opening quarter points.

For the game, Charae Richardson totaled 19 points and Brandi added 15.  However, according to Bronchos coach Jan Conner it was their hustle that impressed her most in the route of the Gophers.

“What can you say about Brandi and Charae, I mean they are just awesome,” said Conner.  “They are deflecting passes, they are grabbing the ball.  You never see Brandi or Charae not getting a loose ball.  And, they don’t just grab it, they take it and go.  I was just as pleased as I could be at the both of them.”

Lafayette Jeff (12-9), which won for the 9th time in its last 12 games, will not play again until they open up sectional play on Friday February 8th.  The Bronchos opponent will be the sectional’s host, Logansport, who currently sports a 15-5 record.  Lafayette Jeff has not won a sectional in girls basketball since 1995.

Clinton Prairie (2-17), which lost its 12th straight game against the Bronchos, was led in scoring by the seven points from freshman Kara Werner.

The Gophers will play their regular season finale on January 31st at West Lafayette before beginning sectional play on February 5th against Tri-Central (13-8) in the Frontier Sectional.

GBB: Lafayette Jeff Scores Senior Night Victory over Noblesville

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – The host Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos had six players score in a 20-point opening quarter against Noblesville on January 26th en route to a 72-47 victory over the Millers on ‘Senior Night’ at the Crawley Center.

Jeff, which led 20-8 after the first quarter, honored its four seniors in a pre-game ceremony.  Three of the seniors have missed time this year due to injuries.  Sara Abrams (ACL injury), Tara Perigo (broken finger), and Julie Ruff (eye surgery) all have made remarkable recoveries from their injuries to return to the floor to finish out their senior season’s for the Bronchos.

The fourth senior, Lacy Roberts, has had an interesting final season as well.  In fact, her increased offensive production during the second half of the season has been quite remarkable.  The 5’9” guard has gone from a 5 ppg scorer the first half of the season, to nearly a 10 ppg scorer during the second half of the season.

Roberts scored 13 points in the 25-point win over the Millers.  She scored eight of the team’s 15 third-quarter points, as the Bronchos extended a 17-point halftime advantage to 21 to begin the fourth (56-35).

Sophomore Brandi Richardson then took control of the game in the final quarter for Lafayette Jeff.  The 5’1” point-guard scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth, as the Bronchos won for the eighth time in their last eleven games.  She also contributed 11 rebounds and five assists.

Brandi’s cousin, Charae Richardson, added 19 points and seven rebounds as Jeff improved to 11-9 (6-3 HCC).

Noblesville, which fell to 6-12 (3-5 HCC) with the loss, got a team-high 11 points from senior Keeley Crews. Junior Chey Arvin chipped in 10 for the Millers, who will travel to Brownsburg on January 29th for their final conference game of the season.

Lafayette Jeff will play its final regular season game that same night at Clinton Prairie.

BB: 4A #10 Lafayette Jeff bests city rival 1A #2 Lafayette Central Catholic

By Chris May
Boys Basketball Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – Dealing with a difficult week, Lafayette Jeff found comfort in doing what they do best on January 25, hitting shots and beating opponents.

Following the dismissal of three seniors – including starter Blaine Koger – earlier in the week for violations of team rules, the Bronchos hit 10 three-pointers, shot 50 percent from the field, and withstood a 31-point barrage by Lafayette Central Catholic junior Dru Anthrop in notching an 87-77 win over the Knights in the spirited Lafayette battle played at the Crawley Center.

“It was a great environment out there,” Jeff coach Scot Bunnell remarked.  “I thought it was a great crowd, a great atmosphere and those are the games that kids love to play in.”

“When you play these guys you don’t have to do much to get the guys up for it,” said Central Catholic coach Dave Barrett.  “The rivalry brings it out of them.”

A big key to the effort and outcome for Jeff was sophomore Roddy Richardson.  Taking the starting spot of Koger, Richardson hit 3 three-pointers in the first four minutes of the game, giving the Bronchos a lead they never relinquished.

Central Catholic committed four turnovers on their first four possessions, while the hosts scored the first eight points.  After Richardson’s third trey, Jeff led 17-8, setting the tone.

“We faced a little adversity this week, losing Koger, so we had to play some different kids and play some different lineups,” Bunnell said.

“Roddy Richardson was the kid that we moved into the starting lineup and he came out and hit those three threes and I think that told everybody ‘we’re going to be okay’, it relaxed and settled everybody down.”

With Richardson soothing Jeff’s concerns, Central Catholic junior Dru Anthrop led his team.

Anthrop scored the Knights’ first three field goals and scored eight points in the first quarter as Central Catholic closed within two, 22-20, at the end of the first.

Anthrop added seven points in the second quarter and hit two game-tying baskets as the Knights tied the game three times in the later portions of the half.  But proving their depth of scoring, Jeff had six players – all of their varsity players with the exception of first quarter hero Roddy Richardson – score in the period and held a 44-40 halftime advantage.

The Bronchos started the third quarter with more scoring diversity and again with an outside-in approach.  In succession, a Jesse Berry three, a Broderick Lewis dunk, and another three by Joe Gamble gave Jeff their largest lead, 52-40 forcing a Central Catholic timeout.

“It’s tough,” Barrett stated.  “There were certain guys we were going to let shoot and those were some of the guys that hit three or four of them.”

“You can’t guard them all out there, but then again you’ve got to guard them all out there.  And when you get out on them they take it to the hole.”

Central Catholic got as close as five with 5:51 left in the game, but Jeff – the fourth most potent offense in the state – kept scoring and won by a 10-point margin.

5’10 junior guard Brandon Williams paced the winners with 21, scoring 13 of them in the fourth quarter.

“He showed a lot of maturity because he went through foul trouble and he had to fight through that,” Bunnell said.

Williams picked up his fourth foul with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

“He’s used to playing 30 or 32 minutes a game (and played 23 tonight).  I thought he did a good job, I couldn’t be prouder.”

Roddy Richardson scored 17, Jesse Berry finished with 15, and Broderick Lewis scored 12 points and got eight rebounds.

“I couldn’t have been prouder of the effort,” Bunnell said.  “We got broke down a lot defensively, we gave up a lot of easy baskets, but ultimately I thought we showed a lot of toughness and had good concentration tonight.”

Anthrop finished with a game-high 31 points, keeping his team in the game.

“He understands the game,” Barrett said.  “He understands what the defense is trying to do and he knows how to slash and back-cut and get an easy layup or take his man off the dribble and use his body, he just has a knack for doing that.”

Anthrop’s senior brother Jade scored 15, while Daniel Mills had 14 and 6’9” center Cameron Leopker finished with nine points.

“I think they always play great against us and I thought they played great tonight,” Bunnell said of LCC.  “Give them some credit they’ve got a chance of going a long way in the tournament.”

Girls Basketball: 4A #11 HSE Defeats Lafayette Jeff on Buzzer-beater

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

FISHERS – Lafayette Jeff’s hopes of defeating Hamilton Southeastern for the first time in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play evaporated in the final seconds as Southeastern’s Paige Smith rebounded a Kelsey Lamb miss and scored on a put-back as time expired, lifting the host Royals to a thrilling 53-52 win on January 19th.

Lafayette Jeff, which began HCC competition in girls basketball during the 2004-2005 season, has lost all four conference outings against the Royals.  The last two losses though have been by a total of four points.

However, it looked for a while like this conference battle with Southeastern would be different than the previous three for the Bronchos.

Sophomore Brandi Richardson scored Jeff’s first 11 points, as the Bronchos built an 11-point lead after one quarter of play (19-8).

Junior Courtney Osborn would make her presence known though in the second period for Hamilton Southeastern, as the Royals turned a double figure deficit into a three point halftime lead (28-25).  Osborn who averages 16.3 ppg, scored 8 of her 10 first half points during the second period.  The 5’8” guard would finish with 14 points for the game.

The third period then saw the emergence of the 6’0” power forward Smith.  The junior scored six of her team-high 18 points in the third as the Royals extended their lead to five (42-27) to begin the fourth.  And as a sign of things to come, she scored all three of her third period buckets on put-backs.  She would finish the ball-game with a double-double, as she pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with her 18 points.

“Paige is playing so well for us right now,” said Hamilton Southeastern coach Chris Huppenthal.  “She’s just having a tremendous season and I’m happy for her.”

However, the Bronchos were able to get themselves back in the game during the fourth quarter by what Huppenthal described as his team playing “not to lose.”

After failing to extend a three point lead on multiple positions, the Royals left the door open for the Bronchos to pull of some late-game heroics.

And that’s exactly what they did.  Senior Lacey Roberts banked in a shot from the paint with under thirty-seconds to play, giving Jeff a 52-51 lead.

The Royals then proceeded to turn the ball over, as they were called for a five-second violation while trying to inbound the ball.

Having to foul, Southeastern sent sophomore Channie Williams to the free throw line with 8.9 seconds remaining.  After missing her first attempt, Jeff coach Jan Conner then instructed her to miss the second one intentionally.

The decision though would backfire on the 25-year veteran coach, as the Royals had enough time to go the entire length of the floor and get two shots off.  The second of those being Smith’s rebound put-back at the buzzer, which won the game for Southeastern.

“We tried to get Channie to miss it and then have them have to dribble the ball down the length of the floor,” said Conner.  “You know it didn’t work so I’ll take the fault for that, because we were trying something to make them use up the clock.”

“I’m just really disappointed on the last play of the game we don’t have somebody that puts a body on 41,” said Conner referring to Smith’s game-winning basket.  “41 is absolutely a rebounding machine.  I mean that’s one of the finest rebounders I’ve seen in a long time.”

With the win, 4A #11 Hamilton Southeastern improved to 13-4 and 7-1 in the HCC.  However, Huppenthal was displeased by the fact that his team failed to put the Bronchos away earlier in the fourth quarter.

“There was one point I turned to my assistant George Odom and I said to him it seems like we’re playing not to lose,” said Huppenthal.  “We had a lot of opportunities to build on the lead and just weren’t able to do it.  We’ve got to be able to take advantage of those situations and we didn’t do it tonight.”

Lafayette Jeff which fell to 10-9 (5-3 HCC) was lead in scoring by the 24 points from Brandi Richardson.  Her cousin, Charae Richardson, chipped in 16 in the loss to the Royals.

Boys Basketball: 4A #7 Lafayette Jeff Crushes Harrison

By Paul Brown
Contributing Writer

WEST LAFAYETTE – The Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos allowed only 11 points over the final 3 quarters of a Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivalry game, handing the Harrison Raiders a lopsided 81-30 loss on January 18th.

The 51-point difference represents Lafayette Jeff’s largest margin of victory since a 55-point victory on  January 12, 2000.

The problems started early for the Raiders, when senior Ryan Powell left the game with a leg injury early in the first quarter.  He had returned to the Harrison bench on crutches by the end of the game.

The first quarter looked promising offensively for Harrison as they managed to score 19 points.  Their offense soon stalled, however, as they managed only 5 points in each of the second and third quarters and only 1 point in the final quarter.

Junior Levi Armstrong led Harrison (2-11, 0-6 HCC) with 11 points, all of which were scored in the first quarter of play.

The Bronchos, on the other hand, started well with 31 first-quarter points and continued their scoring to finish with 81 points.  They shot 44 percent from 2-point range and 37 percent from 3 point range for the game.

The Bronchos (13-1, 5-0 HCC) were led in scoring by junior Brandon Williams’ 24 points and sophomore Jesse Berry’s 23.  Senior Broderick Lewis led Lafayette Jeff’s dominant rebounding with 13 total rebounds.  The Bronchos grabbed 59 total rebounds compared to Harrison’s 25.

The Bronchos brought in their subs to play most of the fourth quarter, as their 20-point halftime lead turned into a 40-point lead after 3 quarters.

The cross-county rivalry game was physical from start to finish, with a total of 30 combined fouls.  Harrison was simply unable to keep up with Lafayette Jeff’s rapid style of play for much more than the first quarter.

Girls Basketball: Lafayette Jeff Outruns Indianapolis Tech

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – On the same night former Lafayette Jefferson great Kay Sharp was recognized as being a member of this year’s Indiana Basketball Hall Of Fame’s Silver Anniversary Team, current Bronchos star Charae Richardson had a game for the ages.

In fact, Sharp who is Carmel’s junior varsity coach, saw her career high 42 points matched by the junior Richardson in Lafayette Jeff’s 97-75 rout of Indianapolis Tech on January 17th.

The 5’7” guard scored 23 of her career high 42 points from the foul line where she was 23 for 24 in the win over the Titans.

Charae’s cousin, Brandi Richardson, also had a great game versus Tech.  The sophomore point guard scored 25 points as the two combined to score 67 points, which nearly equaled the entire Titans output.

Tech simply had no answer on how to slow down Lafayette Jeff in the first half.  The Bronchos raced out to a 29-17 first quarter lead and didn’t let up.  They scored 28 second quarter points and led 57-39 at halftime.

The Titans held the Bronchos to 17 fewer points in the second half, but the damage was already done as Lafayette Jeff won its third straight to improve to 10-8.

Next up for the Bronchos is a big Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle at Hamilton Southeastern on Saturday January 19.  If the Bronchos (5-2 HCC) win that game, then they will draw even with the Royals (6-1 HCC) for second place in the HCC standings. Fishers currently holds claim to the top spot in the conference with a 7-0 mark.

Indianapolis Tech (5-12), which got a team-high 23 points from senior Courtney Cross in the loss, will travel to Indianapolis Manual on Jan. 22 for its next game.

Girls Basketball: 4A Lafayette Jeff Routs 3A West Lafayette 72-47

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

West Lafayette – Apparently Lafayette Jeff point-guard Brandi Richardson enjoys crossing the Wabash River to play basketball in West Lafayette.

In the Bronchos 88-63 win at Harrison (West Lafayette) on Jan. 12 the super sophomore scored a game-high 24 points.

On January 15th, Lafayette Jeff again crossed the Wabash River to take-on West Lafayette.  And once again Richardson was at her best.  She scored her team’s first 15 points as the Bronchos jumped all over the host Red Devils 21-2 after one quarter en route to a 72-47 victory.

In her last five games, the 5’1” Richardson is averaging 23 points per game for the Bronchos.

“I’ve been watching a lot of Purdue games,” said Lafayette Jeff coach Jan Conner.  “I haven’t seen anybody; I haven’t seen anybody that Purdue has played even except for maybe Connecticut who has players that can do what Brandi does.  She’s not hitting 18/19 footers.  She’s hitting 23/24 footers out there of the dribble, of the fast break.”

However, after falling behind by 19 points in the game’s first eight minutes, West Lafayette battled back in the second quarter.  The Red Devils outscored Jeff 18-8 in the second period, and trailed 29-20 at halftime.

Jeff would put the game away though in the third period, outscoring its Tippecanoe County rival 25-9.  Charae Richardson and Lacey Roberts combined to score 15 third-quarter points for the Bronchos.

West Lafayette, which was led in scoring by the 18 points of sophomore MacKenzie Staton, was plagued by turnovers in the loss to the Bronchos.  In fact, Coach Jane Schott’s team had just as many turnovers as they did points (20) in the first half of play.  For the game, the Red Devils turned the ball over a grand total of 32 times.

Lafayette Jeff, which improved to 9-8 with the win, will return to the hardwood on January 17th when the host Indianapolis Arsenal Tech.

West Lafayette, which fell below five-hundred with the loss (8-9), will next travel to 4A McCutcheon on January 22nd.

Boys Swimming: Hamilton Southeastern Cruises to Title at HCC Meet

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Fishers – Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern bounced back in fine fashion from a dual meet loss to #2 North Central (Indianapolis) on Jan. 10 to capture the 2008 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held January 12th at the Hamilton Southeastern pool.

The champion Royals tallied 488 points.  Zionsville finished second with a score of 308.50, and Fishers came home third with 240 points.

Hamilton Southeastern recorded eight victories in the win.  New conference records were established in six of those wins.  In fact, Hamilton Southeastern’s boys team duplicated the feat of its girls team by setting new meet records in all three relays.

A pair of Royal swimmers set new conference marks in individual events.

Senior Austin Mudd established new conference records in both the 200 yard I.M. and the 100 yard backstroke.  He also was a member of two relay teams which set new meet records.

Derek Paul was the second Hamilton Southeastern swimmer to win an individual event with a new conference record.  The senior won the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 59.11, eclipsing the previous conference mark by just over two-tenths of a second.

Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen had this team say about all the new conference marks established by his swimmers.

“I think it’s just the pride they have in our conference,” said Pedersen.  Last year this was the best swimming conference in the state.  We beat the MIC at the state meet, and we take a lot of pride in that.  And I think they take a lot of pride in that record board; and I
just think they were ready to go today.”

Two other swimmers set new conference records in individual events at the meet.

Westfield senior Ben Wachtel established new meet records in both the 200 and 100 yard freestyles.  The Purdue signee won the 200 free in a time of 1:42.74.  He then later swam a time of 46.83 to win the 100 free.  Oh by the way, it was his own record he broke in both events.

Lafayette Jefferson’s Ben Russell broke a six-year-old conference record in the 500 yard freestyle.  The senior swam a time of 4:41.31, shattering the previous record by over five seconds.

The Zionsville Eagles recorded 18 Top ten finishes at the meet to out-distance Fishers for third place.

“It was really good and a little surprising to be honest with you,” said Zionsville coach Scott Kubly on his team’s performance.  “We’ve had quite a few meets here in the last seven days, and are times just keep getting slower and slower.  And today we just kind of breakout and have the best meet of the season.  It was incredible; the kids did a fantastic job on both sides, and I’m proud of them.”

The teams finishing in the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots were separated by a total of four points.  Tenth-ranked Westfield grabbed fourth place with a score of 209.50.  Noblesville was fifth with a score of 205.50.  The Millers beat sixth place Brownsburg by a mere half a point.

Click here to watch all of our video coverage from the meet.  Featured in the video highlights are Mudd in the 100 yard backstroke and Wachtel in the 100 yard freestyle.  In addition, both swimmers talk about their outstanding individual performances during the meet.  There is also an audio clip from Pederson on the Royals’ success at the conference meet.
