IBCA Bob King Coaches of the Year
The IBCA also awarded six coach of the year awards, two per district. The winners …
District 1: Jason Groves, Triton
A
graduate of Glenn, Jason went on to play for Mike Lightfoot at Bethel
College, which won a national championship. He later taught at West
Central for two years, then became junior varsity coach at Triton from
2000-05. His squads have done progressively better each year, starting
at 4-17 in 2004-05. The Trojans finished this season 25-2 and won the
Class A state championship.
District 1: Tom Peller, Chesterton
Tom
is a 1983 graduate of the University of Indianapolis. He was an
assistant at Merrillville and Chesterton before assuming the Trojans’
head coach position in 2003. This season, Peller led Chesterton to a
19-3 record, and the Trojans were ranked in the IBCA coaches’ poll Top
10 most of the season. His six-year coaching record is 83-45.
District 2: Travis Daugherty, Tipton
Travis
graduated from Alexandria and Anderson University. He launched his
career under the mentorship of coaching legend Garth Cone. After two
years as an assistant with Cone, Travis took over the direction of the
Tipton Blue Devils in 2004-05, and he’s enhanced the win column each
year. He led this year’s team to its first-ever Hoosier Conference
title with an undefeated 6-0 record. His squad spent much of the
current season as the Associated Press No. 1 team in 2A, and the Blue
Devils reached as high as No. 9 in the IBCA coaches’ poll.
District 2: Mark Galloway, Carmel
Coach
Galloway is a graduate of Plainfield and Bethel College. He is 102-36
in six years at Carmel. This season, the Greyhounds were 18-2 and
co-Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champs for the first time in
school history. In 2006, Mark led the Greyhounds to a Hamilton County
championship and to sectional championships in both 2006 and 2008.
District 3: J.R. Holmes, Bloomington South
Coach
Holmes is wrapping up his 38th year in coaching with a record of 580
wins, a mark of almost 15 victories every season! He’s coached at
Tunnelton, Mitchell, and at Bloomington South. His teams have won 11
sectionals and six regionals. J.R. has led his teams to 10 conference
titles, and he’s had three different teams in the IHSAA’s Final Four.
This year brought Bloomington South’s fourth consecutive 20-plus-win
season.
District 3: Jim Shannon, New Albany
A
graduate of Anderson and Ball State University, Jim Shannon is in this
24th year as head coach and 28th year overall. His overall record
stands at 341-197 that includes eight sectional championships, one
regional championship, and 12 conference championships. Coach Shannon’s
record at New Albany, where his teams have won dive sectional titles
and six conference championships, is 176-58. This is Jim’s second IBCA
District Coach of the Year Award. He has been involved with coaching
the North-South All-Star Game, the Junior All-Stars, the Hoosier
Basketball Coaches Association District All-Star Game, and the Indiana
All-Stars. He and his wife, Tammy, are proud parents of Spencer and
Allyson.
