FB: Surprises abound in HCC gridiron chase

HA Staff Report

Well, it
hasn’t taken long to reveal that the Hoosier Crossroads Conference race is
going to be a topsy-turvy affair. Friday night’s results redden the faces of
preseason predictors and jumbled the standings.

We told you
last week that the Westfield-Avon game was going to have a big impact on the
league race, and indeed it did. The Shamrocks clubbed the Orioles 24-13. That
made Avon, a preseason co-favorite, 0-2 out of the gate. It also left Westfield
at the top of the standings along with an unexpected cast. They join
Brownsburg, Zionsville, and Fishers at 2-0.

Brownsburg
travelled to Lucas Oil Stadium and picked up its second win, 14-7 over
Noblesville. Fishers handed another of the conference favorites, Hamilton
Southeastern, a 10-6 setback. Finally, Zionsville continued to be the most
impressive team in the early going. The Eagles clubbed McCutcheon 54-3.

Harrison
blistered Lafayette Jeff 50-14. Keep in mind the Raiders only lost to Westfield
by a single point. Do not count them out in the title chase.

This coming
Friday, the highlight affair will feature Fishers journeying to Westfield. That
contest will thin the ranks of the unbeaten one way or another. The other
contest to watch is Avon travelling to Harrison. The Orioles certainly qualify
as a desperate team right now. Meanwhile, Harrison will need this one to stay
in the conference chase.

GG: #13 Lafayette Jeff defeats host #26 Fishers by seven strokes

Fishers’ Kelli Witt and Lafayette Jefferson’s Regan Pittard shared medalist honors with 37s, but it was the 13th-ranked visiting Bronchos who came away with a seven-stroke victory Aug. 24 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls golf match at Stoney Creek in Noblesville.

Lafayette Jeff carded a 161 to hold off No. 26 Fishers (168), who figure to battle third-ranked defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern, No. 9 Noblesville, 12th-ranked Avon, and No. 17 Zionsville as well as the Tigers for the HCC title Aug. 31 at Bear Slide.

Witt, who played in the same group as Pittard, had a chance to take low-scoring honors outright but missed a one-foot putt for par on the final hole. Pittard’s Bronchos had to scramble just to get to the match after fighting a losing battle with the epic Hamilton County traffic.

FB: HCC action was furious in week one on the gridiron

HA Staff Report

While most
of the major schools in Indiana were warming up with non-conference foes Friday
night, HCC teams entered the fray of league action. One of the unique aspects
of Hoosier Crossroads football is that the entire schedule is comprised of
conference games. Here is a look at Friday’s action.

Much has
been made in the media of Zionsville’s move to 5A. We at Hoosier Authority are
not sure why. The Eagles have played a
5A schedule for years, ever since joining the HCC. They showed Friday
they are ready for the rigors by blasting Lafayette Jeff 41-0. It was the first
shutout suffered by the Bronchos in 14 seasons.

The
explosive offenses forgot to show up at Hamilton Southeastern. The contest
between the Royals and Avon was billed as an early showdown and was expected to
be a high scoring affair. It was anything but that. Hamilton Southeastern
prevailed in a defensive struggle 7-6. Westfield conquered Harrison in another
nail biting clash. The rapidly improving Shamrocks came away with a 14-13
victory.

The offensive
shootout took place in Noblesville. Fishers invaded the Millers’ home and came
away with a 38-29 win. Brownsburg rounded out the slate with a 19-8 victory
over McCutcheon.

The results
from opening night mean that only one game this coming Friday will be between
two teams who won in week one. That will take place when Hamilton Southeastern
travels to corporation foe Fishers. The other key game on the docket will be in
Avon where the orioles try to bounce back against Westfield. A Shamrock win
would spell real trouble for Avon’s title hopes this time around.

FB: Host Zionsville sounds HCC notice with 41-0 blasting of Lafayette Jeff

Host Zionsville stymied Lafayette Jefferson’s offense Aug. 21 in the duo’s season-opening Hoosier Crossroads Conference clash, holding the Bronchos to just 49 total yards of total offense and handing them their first shutout loss since the 1996 season, 41-0.

(CLICK HERE FOR GAME PICTURES FROM PHOTO EDITOR MARK GRICIUS, WITH EQUIPMENT PROVIDED BY ROBERTS IMAGING!!)

Alex Woodard racked up 93 yards rushing for the Eagles on only eight carries, one of which was a seven-yard touchdown run that made it 38-0 zip in the fourth quarter. Jack Denton added 58 yards on five carries with two total touchdowns (an 18-yard pass from quarterback Chris Roberts, a 49-yard run), while Paul Gabor 11 toted the ball 11 times for 53 yards and another two rushing scores of eight and two yards.

Lafayette Jeff, which returns only two starters on offense, struggled mightily in the opening half in losing three fumbles and suffering through seven penalties.

Next up for Zionsville is its opening HCC road date Aug. 28 at McCutcheon (0-1). Lafayette Jeff will travel next Friday to HCC foe Harrison (West Lafayette) (0-1).
