Boys Tennis: #5 Zionsville captures 2008 HCC Tournament

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

BROWNSBURG – The fifth-ranked Zionsville Eagles won three of the five competitions at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Tennis Championships on September 20 to edge second place #8 Hamilton Southeastern by eight points, 51 to 43 on a very warm afternoon for tennis.

The tournament host #21 Bulldogs finished in third place with 36 points.

Make sure you check out the video player at the end of this article for highlights from both of the #1 singles and #1 doubles matches! In addition, be sure to click here to view a gallery of photos from the event!

The following are summaries of all five championship matches.
Note: to view tournament brackets from all five competitions, click the corresponding document links at the very bottom of this page!

#1 Singles
Zionsville senior Andrew Kahn defeated Hamilton Southeastern sophomore Austin Woldmoe 3-6, 4-0 (retired) to win a championship at the conference tournament for the third consecutive year.

Kahn, who was the champion at #2 singles the past two seasons, was declared the winner at #1 singles when the top-seeded Woldmoe developed a severe leg cramp and had to retire after dropping the first four games of the second set.

The video player at the end of this story contains an interview with the new HCC #1 singles champion Andrew Kahn!

#2 Singles
Hamilton Southeastern junior Nikhil Kulkarni, the top seed, defeated Zionsville junior J.P. Dwyer 6-3, 4-0 (retired) to give the #8 Royals their only championship at the 2008 conference tournament.

Like Woldmoe at #1 singles, Dwyer was forced to retire from the match after experiencing cramps on what was an unseasonably warm late summer afternoon in which the air temperature approached 85 degrees.

#3 Singles
The #2 seed Austin Weinbrecht of Brownsburg upset top-seeded Conner Dunn of Zionsville 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 (points) to win the title at #3 singles.

After splitting the first two sets, the two played a points’ only third set to determine the champion.

The decisive third set was played to 11 points instead of the scheduled 10, after Weinbrecht reached 10 points without the necessary to point margin of victory.

#1 Doubles
The top-seeded Zionsville tandem of Nick Laconi and Joe Hammond defeated the Hamilton Southeastern team of Max Crouse and Zach Johnson with relative ease, 6-3 and 6-0 to win the title at #1 doubles.

Laconi and Hammond, who are both juniors, captured a doubles title at the conference tournament for a second straight year. Last season the two teamed up to win the title at #2 doubles.

#2 Doubles
Zionsville made it a clean sweep of the doubles’ competitions when the #1 seeded team of Taylor Wong and Max Watson defeated Brownsburg’s Jake Hopkins and Jake Stevens 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 (points) in a very tightly contested competition which was decided by a points only third set.

And just like the championship at #3 singles, the third set went beyond its scheduled distance of 10 points, with Wong and Watson clinching the title at 11-9.

Final Team Standings
1. #5 Zionsville 51 points
2. #8 Hamilton Southeastern 43 points
3. #21 Brownsburg 36 points
4. #20 Fishers 34 points
5. #25 Harrison (West Lafayette) 28 points
6. Westfield 26 points
7. McCutcheon 21 points
8. Noblesville 19 points
9. Lafayette Jefferson 14 points
10. Avon 8 points
