Some may
consider it sour grapes, but it is a fact. The schedule maker does the HCC no
favors in the state track tournament. While the MIC, a league no more spread
out than the HCC feeds into four different regionals, all ten HCC schools feed
into one regional. That is the meat grinder at West Lafayette. Therefore, the
HCC teams tend to beat each other up and reduce the number of athletes that
qualify to the next level. It happened again Tuesday evening. Despite the
handicap, the conference had a strong showing.
As they did
in the sectional, the Hamilton Southeastern Royals finished second to Carmel in
the competition. They amassed 77 points on the evening. Brownsburg was right
behind in third with 59 and Avon finished fourth with 36. 33 points were enough
to farner Harrison sixth place in the meet while Westfield was eighth with 30
markers. Fishers tied for ninth with 26 points while Noblesville scored 23,
good enough for 11th. Lafayette Jeff was 14th, Zionsville
17th, and McCutcheon 20th for the evening.
Here is a
look at the individual results from the West Lafayette Regional.
It was a busy coupla days in the Lafayette area for some ranked baseball teams, with three higher-ranked schools going down in defeat and another needing a seventh-inning ******* squeeze to survive. A review …
Frankfort upsets 3A #1 Crawfordsville Alex Isgrigg went 3 for 3 with three runs batted May 22 in as host Frankfort scored five runs in the sixth inning to upset Class 3A No. 1 Crawfordsville, 10-6, in a Sagamore Conference baseball game.
Blake Ayres (2-0) allowed three hits and struck out three in 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief after Frankfort fell behind 6-2 in the top of the third. Ayres also was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Kyle Zerfas drove in two runs for the victorious Hot Dogs (12-9).
Jordan Kiger went 2 for 2 for the defending state champion Athenians (24-2, 13-1).
4A #10 Kokomo outlasts 1A #3 Central Catholic, 11-9 Class A No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic received 3-for-4 efforts from Scott Windler and Tyler Child as well as three RBIs from Reed Drysdale May 21, but the visiting Knights gave up 10 hits to the Class 4A No. 10 victorious Wildkats.
Lafayette Jefferson thumps 4A #11 Westfield, 9-2 Jeff McNeely celebrated his birthday May 22 by going 2 for 4, including four runs and a triple, and Gage Roth went 3 for 4 with five RBIs as the host Bronchos upset the Shamrocks in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference contest.
Al Clark added two hits, and D.J. Frederick had two hits and two RBIs for the Bronchos (13-9), who handed Westfield just its fourth loss of the season.
1A #1 Frontier survives scare Frontier was on the verge of its first loss of the season before Colton Oland’s ******* squeeze scored Dylan Sterrett in the bottom of the seventh May 21, giving the Class A top-ranked Falcons a 5-4 victory over visiting Clinton Prairie.
The visiting Gophers had taken a 4-1 lead with a four-run third inning thanks to Chris Bandy’s bases-loaded double.
Sophomore Chad Timmons, making his first career start, held Frontier off-balance after Jon-Marc Ream led off the game with a home run. Ream also doubled in the contest, while Oland had a triple and Frank Fisk added a home run for Frontier (25-0).
It was much
the same story Thursday evening in the boy’s sectionals that Hoosier Crossroads
Conference fans saw from the girls on Tuesday night. The league claimed two
sectional team titles and performed solidly from top to bottom.
At Lafayette
Jeff, the host Bronchos took top honors by posting 162 points. That easily
outdistanced second place McCutcheon which finished with 123.5. Harrison took
fourth place in the field with a score of 93.
At Carmel,
it was truly a case of same story, different night. The five HCC teams in the
field ended second through sixth behind team champion Carmel. However, the
order of the HCC squads was a bit different from the girls’ results. Zionsville
claimed second with 98 points, Hamilton Southeastern third with 91.5, Fishers
fourth with 72, Westfield fifth with 64, and Noblesville sixth with 60.
Avon took
the title at the Plainfield Sectional. The Orioles outscored second place
Brownsburg 145-104.
Full
individual results from all the sectionals are available on the state pages of
Hoosier Authority.
Harrison and
Brownsburg claimed team sectional titles for the HCC in action Tuesday evening.
The Raiders won their own sectional while Brownsburg prevailed at South Putnam.
Those were the highlights of what was a solid but not spectacular night for the
conference.
Harrison
amassed 155.5 points in outpacing second place West Lafayette. Lafayette Jeff
was third with 97.5. McCutcheon was a disappointing seventh with 33 points on
the evening.
Brownsburg
dominated the field at the South Putnam Sectional. The Bulldogs finished with
148.5 points to easily outdistance Plainfield for the crown. Avon was third in
the field with a total of 104 points.
The
remaining five HHC teams all flow into the same sectional held at Noblesville.
The results were all too familiar to league teams. The schools took the five
places from second through sixth, but could not overtake Carmel for the title.
Hamilton Southeastern headed the contingent in second with 134 points while
Noblesville was third with 85. Westfield claimed fourth on the evening, Fishers
fifth, and Zionsville sixth.
Individual
results from all of these sectionals can be found on the state pages of Hoosier
Authority.
Pairings
have been released for the sectional round of the state tournament and the HCC
will be sending a number of powerful squads into action. In many instances, it
may be a league foe that will spell the end of the season for HCC squads. Let’s
take a look at the match-ups.
The Decatur
Central Sectional launched the host Hawks to last year’s state championship.
Brownsburg and Avon both play in this field and if you didn’t look past the
first round you would think they got great draws. The Bulldogs will face
Indianapolis Manual in round one and Avon will test Indianapolis Tech. The
problem is that the two would then meet in the semi-final. Meanwhile Decatur
Central drew a bye and will face the winner of Ben Davis and Pike.
The
head-to-head clashes are nowhere near as iffy at the Carmel Sectional.
Neighborhood foes Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers will open action against
each other and then Zionsville and Noblesville will have a conference spat in
the other first round contest. However, the big game is in the bye bracket. Westfield
will tangle with Carmel. That means one of the pre-tourney favorites will be
gone quickly.
In
Lafayette, Jefferson drew a first round contest with tradition laden
Logansport. Meanwhile, you guessed it; McCutcheon and Harrison will meet in the
other opening game.
Even with
the unlucky draws, look for at least two HCC teams to wear sectional crowns.
Brownsburg is the favorite at Decatur Central and we are picking Westfield to get
past Carmel and its league foes at Carmel. As for Lafayette, pick a name out of
the hat in this one.
The Fishers Varsity Baseball Team
(11-14 / 4-12)started the week off with
a victory 6 to 5 over Lafayette Jefferson.
Fishers open the scoring in the first inning with a base hit
by Tyler Hoberty andRay Calloway’s
first home run of the game 2 to 0. Lafayette Jefferson came back with 1 in the
3rd and 2 in the 4th to take a 3 to 2 lead. In the 5th
the Tigers started their rally by Tyler Hoberty base on balls, Clark reached
base on an error and Ray Calloway hit his second home run of the game to give
the Tigers a lead 5 to 4. Lafayette again came back to tie the score in the top
of the 7th to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom half of the 8th
Schlotter walked, Foley walked Bannitt reached first on a infield single and
thenSchlotter scored on a error by
Lafayette to win the game.
Lafayette
Jeff edged conference rival Fishers by one stroke, 322-323, to capture the
title at the Mooresville Invitational. The meet was played at Heartland
Crossing. The two HCC squads bested several Conference Indiana and Mid-State
reams for the title. Jacob Yokum of Lafayette Jeff earned medalist honors with
a 76. Here is a look at the final team scores.
