BB: 4A Sectional #7, #2 Lafayette Jeff Thumps Logansport 60-37

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – The Logansport Berries were huge underdogs in their Class 4A Sectional #7 opener against #2 Lafayette Jefferson on February 26th at the Crawley Center.  After all, the sectional host Bronchos had defeated the Berries 76-42 back on December 21st at Logansport.

However, Logansport came out inspired and jumped out to an 11-5 lead in hopes of pulling of a monster upset.  The Berries hit the Bronchos with a trio of opening-quarter three’s and held a 16-12 lead after one period of play.

Jeff’s starting backcourt of junior Brandon Williams and sophomore Jesse Berry would each get their games rolling though in the second quarter.  The duo, which averages a combined 33.4 ppg, each scored nine points in the period as the Bronchos outscored the Berries 19-6 in the quarter to grab a 31-22 halftime advantage.

After holding Logansport to just two made field goals during the second quarter, Lafayette Jeff’s defense would continue to stifle the Berries during the final 16 minutes of play.  In fact, Logansport would make just five second half field goals and score only 12 points against the Bronchos full-court trapping defense.  For the game, the Berries made just 9 of 30 field goal attempts for thirty-percent.

Meanwhile, junior Shane Wyant was busy providing the bulk of Lafayette Jeff’s offense during the second half of play.  The 6’3” center came of the bench to score 12 of his 16 points in the final two quarters as the Bronchos won their 16th consecutive game.

Lafayette Jeff, which got a game-high 18 points from Williams, improved to 21-1 with the win and now faces Harrison (4-17) on February 29th in the sectional semifinals.  The Bronchos blasted the Raiders 81-30 back on January 18th.

Logansport, which got a team-high 10 points from sophomore Nathan Champion, ends its season at 4-17.

Boys Swimming: HCC State Meet Results/Video

Hamilton Southeastern came up five points shy of winning back-to-back boys swimming & diving state titles on February 23rd.  The Royals had 15 participants in both the finals and the consolation finals but fell to Chesterton 271 to 266.

The Hoosier Crossroads Conference had two other teams finish in the top 15 at the meet.  Zionsville tallied 71 points and finished 9th.  Westfield came home 13th on the strength of two first-place finishes from senior Ben Wachtel.

Wachtel produced two of the three event victories by the conference at the state meet.  The Purdue signee won both the 100 and 200 yard freestyles for the second consecutive year.  This year’s wins though came with some adversity for Wachtel.  In fact, he swam both races with what he believed to be a broken right foot.  He slipped and twisted his foot prior to his first event during Friday’s prelims.  However, he still managed the top qualifying spot in both events and then later went on to record his third and fourth individual state titles.

Hamilton Southeastern’s 400 yard freestyle relay team recorded the third HCC victory at the meet, edging out runner-uo Chesterton by three-tenths of a second.

to watch video highlights of Wachtel winning the 100 yard freestyle, Hamilton Southeastern winning the 400 yard freestyle relay, and HSE coach Andy Pedersen talking about both his team’s runner-up finish as well as the respect he has for Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel!

Boys Basketball: 4A #2 Lafayette Jeff 80, HSE 77

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

FISHERS – For the second consecutive game the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos faced a double digit first-quarter deficit against a Hoosier Crossroads Conference opponent.  And, for the second straight game the 4A #2 Bronchos rallied for a close victory to capture their first outright conference title in boys basketball since 1968 with an 80-77 win over Hamilton Southeastern on February 21st.

Lafayette Jeff, which previously had won its last outright conference title in boys basketball as part of the North Central Conference, fell behind 11-0 to start the game against the host Royals.  Southeastern’s 6’6” junior forward Charlie Duffy scored nine of the team’s first eleven points.

The Bronchos though would whittle away at the deficit and trailed by six (18-12) after one quarter of play.  Lafayette Jeff would turn up its intensity defensively during the second stanza, holding the Royals to just two made field goals in the quarter.  In addition, the Bronchos held Duffy scoreless during the period.

Meanwhile offensively, the Bronchos three-point shooting would start to heat up during the second quarter.  Jeff hit a trio of three-pointers during the quarter, as they outscored Hamilton Southeastern 21-10 during the eight minute stretch to grab a 33-28 halftime lead.

The third quarter though would resemble a yo-yo for the Bronchos.  In fact, they would build as much as a 12-point lead during the quarter.  However, Purdue football signee Chris Carlino would make sure the Royals would not go down quietly.  The 6’3”senior center who was playing his final home game, scored nine points in the third quarter as the Southeastern rallied for a 19-all tie in the quarter and trailed 52-47 to start the fourth.

Carlino though was just getting warmed up, as he produced a near Herculean performance during the final quarter, scoring 19 points.  His teammate Duffy had a nice quarter as well contributing nine points.  For the game, Carlino produced a game-high 34 points and Duffy chipped in 26.

However, their efforts would fall short as Jeff sophomore Jesse Berry had a stellar fourth quarter performance himself.  The 6’1” guard scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the quarter to keep the Royals at bay.  Berry made four field goals during the final quarter of play, three of which were three-pointers to stop mini-runs by the Royals.

Carlino hit a three-pointer with just under five seconds left in the game to pull Hamilton Southeastern to within three 80 to 77.  However, the Royals had no timeouts remaining. Thus the Bronchos didn’t even inbound the ball and the clock expired with Lafayette Jeff (20-1, 9-0 HCC) celebrating its first 20-win regular season in school history.  It was also the first time the Bronchos have beaten Southeastern in boys basketball as a member of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.  Lafayette Jeff, which joined the HCC in basketball at the start of the ‘2004-‘2005 season, had been 0-3 versus the Royals in conference play.

“I think the thing as a coach I’m so proud of is these guys have always played in the moment,” said Lafayette Jeff coach Scot Bunnell.  “You see teams at every level, there’s always upsets.  I felt like we stayed away from the upset this year.”

The Bronchos, who will take a 15-game winning streak into next week’s sectional, suffered their only setback of the season on December 8th against Lawrence North (16-5) 79-71.

Lafayette Jeff, which faces Logansport (4-15) at home to open sectional play on February 26th, had four players in double figures against Southeastern.  Besides Berry’s 23 points, sophomore Roddy Richardson scored 21, and senior Broderick Lewis and junior Brandon Williams each contributed 12 points in the win.

Hamilton Southeastern (13-6 6-3 HCC), which had a four game winning streak snapped by the Bronchos, will finish in a tie for third place with McCutcheon in the final conference standings for the ’07-’08 season.  Brownsburg (15-5) finishes in second place in the final HCC standings with an 8-1 mark.

Hamilton Southeastern begins tournament play on February 26th against conference and county rival Westfield (5-15) in the Carmel Sectional.

BB: 4A #3 Lafayette Jeff Erases 10-point deficit to defeat 4A #11 Brownsburg in Thriller

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – In a game featuring two teams that had won a combined 26 straight games, host 4A #3 Lafayette Jeff erased a 10-point first quarter deficit to defeat 4A #11 Brownsburg 72-69 on February 15th to capture at least a share of the 2007-08 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Title at the Crawley Center.

For the Bronchos (19-1, 8-0 HCC), who began HCC competition in boys basketball during the 2004-05 season, picked up their first-ever HCC title in boys basketball with the win over the Bulldogs (15-4, 8-1 HCC).  Jeff can win the outright league title by winning its regular season finale at Hamilton Southeastern (13-6, 6-2 HCC) on February 21.

Brownsburg took control of the game early though against the Bronchos.  Behind a combined 16 first quarter points from 6’8” division one signees’ Gordon Hayward and Julian Muvunga, the Bulldogs jumped to a 25-15 lead after one quarter of play.

However, Jeff would fight back to begin the second by going on an 8-0 run.  Brownsburg would prevent the Bronchos from grabbing a first-half lead though, as they enjoyed a slim one-point edge at halftime 34-33.

Jeff guards Brandon Williams and Jesse Berry combined to score all 18 of the team’s second quarter points as the Bronchos nearly erased their entire first quarter deficit.

The sophomore Berry continued his hot play in the third, scoring 8 points as Jeff grabbed its first lead of the game in the quarter, before settling for a three point advantage (53-50) to start the fourth.

Hayward and Muvunga each scored six points during the third quarter to help the Bulldogs stay within striking distance to begin the fourth.

Jeff’s lead though would grow to as much as seven during the final quarter.  However, the Bulldogs would battle back to tie the game at 65 with under two minutes to play on a steal and lay-up by junior J.D. Cosby.

Hayward then produced another huge steal for Bulldogs and raced up the floor in an attempt to give Brownsburg the lead back.  But Jeff’s Joe Gamble hustled back on defense and knocked the ball away from Hayward near the sideline.  The two then collided trying to come-up with the loose ball.  The whistle sounded and Hayward picked up his 5th foul with 1:15 left to play.  The Butler signee would head to the bench for the rest of the game after scoring a team-high 26 points.

The Bronchos would take the lead back on two free throws from senior Joe Gamble and would go on to defeat the Bulldogs 72-69.  It was ‘Senior Night’ at the Crawley Center and Gamble (9 points) who was a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line, was one of five Broncho seniors honored before the game.

Free throw shooting was a huge key to Jeff’s win.  The Bronchos hit 18 of 21 second half free throws.  The Bulldogs shot only four second half free throws, making just one of them.

Lafayette Jeff which won for the 14th straight time was led in scoring by the 26 points of sophomore Jesse Berry.  The 6’1” guard scored 11 of his points from the foul line where he was 11 for 13.  Junior guard Brandon Williams was the second Broncho to reach double figures in scoring against Brownsburg with 22 points.

Brownsburg which had its 13-game winning streak snapped against Jeff also got a big effort from the senior Muvunga in addition to the 26 points from Hayward.  The Miami of Ohio bound Muvunga scored 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the loss to the Bronchos.

Brownsburg wraps up its regular season on February 19 with a non-conference home game against North Central (12-7).
