GSW: Hamilton Southeastern runner-up to Carmel at state finals

Hoosier Authority Report

The fox is
still winning, but a lot more hounds have joined the hunt. That is the story
from the Girls State Swimming Finals held Saturday in Indianapolis. Carmel won
its 23rd consecutive State Championship, and in doing so set a
national record for dominance in a sport. As usual, the team closest to the
Greyhounds was Hamilton Southeastern. The Royals swam well but were overwhelmed
427-227.

The real
story for Hoosier Crossroads Conference fans is that six of the ten conference
teams finished in the top 20. More impressively, five league teams ended among
the top 11 teams in Indiana. Noblesville was fifth with 149.5 points,
Zionsville ninth with 91, Westfield tenth with 84.5, and Fishers eleventh with
72 points.

Here is a
look at the complete and very comprehensive results from the meet.

GBB: Six HCC teams still alive in sectional play

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

And then
there were six. Heading into Friday night’s semi-final round of the sectional
tournament, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference has six of its ten members still
alive. That includes all three of the regular season big guns.

First round
action saw league teams go a combined 3-4. That is a little misleading in that
two games saw HCC teams play each other. High powered Fishers dismantled Zionsville
60-37 and Lafayette Jeff put an end to a dismal season for Harrison 58-25.

Three games
saw HCC squads contest outside opposition. The conference went 1-2 in those
battles. Avon made short work of Indianapolis Tech, 52-34. Brownsburg was not
so lucky, losing a 53-28 verdict to highly regarded Decatur Central. Both of those
contests were in the Ben Davis Sectional. At Zionsville, Noblesville fell to
defending state champion Carmel on Tuesday 65-44.

The second
round will be full of challenges for HCC teams. Let’s start at Ben Davis where
it will now be Avon’s turn to try and slow down Decatur Central. The real fun
though, will be in Zionsville. Westfield, which has won 16 games this season,
will get a chance to dethrone Carmel in the first game. The second contest is a
showdown everybody has seen coming. HCC powers Hamilton Southeastern and
Fishers will square off for a trip to the finals. Whoever is left standing at
this location on Saturday night will have more than earned it.

At
McCutcheon, the host Mavericks will enter the sectional fray.  They will face off with Kokomo. Meanwhile,
how is this for a clash of titans? Legendary coaches Jan Conner and Jerry
Hoover will lead Lafayette Jeff and Logansport respectively into battle against
each other. Prospective coaches might want to take a trip up north for a free
clinic.

followed in fifthe by the host Lafayette Jeff Bronchos. Here are the complete

W: Hoosier Crossroads teams advance 45 wrestlers to semi-state round

The ten
schools of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference advanced 45 wrestlers to
semi-state action as a result of their regional performances on Saturday. That
means over 10% of the wrestlers remaining in the individual state tourney hail
from HCC teams.

The
conference was led by Harrison, Westfield, and Avon. All three schools advanced
seven grapplers to the next level. Harrison and Westfield each boasted two
regional champions. Avon claimed one title. The other two Lafayette schools
fared very well. Both Jeff and McCutcheon advanced six wrestlers with one
champion. Fishers duplicated that effort of six with one champion while
competing in the North Montgomery Regional. Also at North Montgomery,
Zionsville pushed through five wrestlers to the next level and claimed two
champions. Hamilton Southeastern advanced just one to the semi-state.
Brownsburg competed in the Mooresville Regional with Avon. The Bulldogs got
four wrestlers through to next week and claimed two regional champions.

Here is a
look at the complete list of HCC Regional Champions.

GBB: HCC teams have tough sectional roads

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

Sectional play begins Tuesday evening and Hoosier Authority predicts the HCC will crown two Sectional Champions when the dust settles Saturday night. The league boasts four teams with 16 or more wins on the campaign this season.

Let’s start up north at the McCutcheon Sectional. Lafayette Jeff (16-4) is the clear favorite in this draw. The Bronchos begin play Tuesday evening versus Harrison. McCutcheon will play Kokomo in the short half of the draw. If there is a roadblock to Jeff taking the title, it is in the form of 17-4 Logansport. The Berries await the Bronchos in the semi-finals. Our prediction is that Jan Conner’s girls take care of business and cut down the nets Saturday night.

The Zionsville Sectional is both loaded with HCC teams and just plain loaded. Five Hoosier Crossroads teams are in the field, including four of the top five teams in the league. If that isn’t enough to perk your interest, throw in defending state champion Carmel and you have the toughest sectional in the state. Carmel and Fishers both drew the long way through this mine field. The Greyhounds will tangle with Noblesville in the first round. Westfield, a 16 game winner, waits in the semi-finals. Fishers has it a little tougher by most people’s view. The Tigers will open in the first round against host Zionsville. They should easily pass that test. However, 19-1 Hamilton Southeastern is lurking in the second round. The winner of that titanic struggle will then likely see Carmel in the final.  We aren’t going out on too long a limb on this one. We will say that our vote goes to whichever HCC team comes out of that Fishers-HSE tussle on Friday.

That leaves Brownsburg and Avon. All these two clubs have to do to win a sectional title is take down the #1 team in America, the Ben Davis Giants on their home floor. Don’t look for it to come even close to happening. However, it is a safe bet that Avon will be the team to try in the finals.
