Girls Swimming: Hamilton Southeastern Dominates Field at HCC Meet

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Fishers – Second-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won 9 of 12 events at the 2008 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Swimming and Diving Championships to easily out-distance runner-up Zionsville 519 to 296 on January 12th.

The host Royals set six new conference records in the win.  In fact, they won all three relays in record time.  The team of Maegan O’Conner, Christina Jacobs, Lindsay Rogers, and Carly Mercer set a new Hamilton Southeastern pool record in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.27.

Southeastern’s three individual conference records were set by senior Lindsay Rogers and sophomore Carly Mercer.  Rogers, who will swim in this year’s Olympic Trials, set new conference marks in both the 200 yard I.M. and the 100 yard breaststroke.  She also was on two of the relay teams that broke conference records.

Mercer claimed her new conference record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.70.  And like Rogers, she also was a part of two conference record relay teams.  In addition, her winning time of 51.72, while not a new conference record, was over two seconds faster than that of teammate Erin Kelley who finished second.

Hamilton Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen had this team say about all the new conference marks established by his swimmers.

“I think it’s just the pride they have in our conference,” said Pedersen.  Last year this was the best swimming conference in the state.  We beat the MIC at the state meet, and we take a lot of pride in that.  And I think they take a lot of pride in that record board; and I
just think they were ready to go today.”

Harrison senior Jenny Connolly, who just happened to be celebrating her 18th birthday on Jan. 12, joined Hamilton Southeastern’s Rogers and Mercer as double individual event winners.

Connolly, who will also compete at the Olympic Trials, had an amazing day.  In fact, she set new conference and pool records in both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard backstroke.  She won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.63.  Then, she came back later in the meet and captured the 100 yard backstroke with a time 55.11.  She also broke her own school record in both events, which she had established prior at last year’s state meet.

The Zionsville Eagles recorded 20 Top 10 finishes at the meet to finish second, 49 points ahead of third place Lafayette Jeff.

“It was really good and a little surprising to be honest with you,” said Zionsville coach Scott Kubly on his team’s performance.  “We’ve had quite a few meets here in the last seven days, and are times just keep getting slower and slower.  And today we just kind of breakout and have the best meet of the season.  It was incredible; the kids did a fantastic job on both sides, and I’m proud of them.”

Sophomore Alex Brennan (200 yard freestyle: 1:57.56) and Sophomore Katie Newcomer (100 yard backstroke 1:00.46) each set new Zionsville school records at the meet.

Click here to watch all of our video coverage from the meet.  Included in the video highlights are: Connolly in the 100 yard backstroke, Rogers in the 200 yard I.M., and Westfield’s Jeanee Coy who came from behind to win the 200 yard freestyle. In addition, there are also interviews available within the highlights from Connolly, Rogers, and Pedersen.  There are two audio clips from Rogers: one on her team’s performance at the HCC meet, and a second about competing in the 2008 United States Olympic Trials with Connolly and Center Grove swimmers Michelle Mckeehan and Allie Day.

Girls Basketball: Lafayette Jeff Defeats Harrison 88-63

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

WEST LAFAYETTE – January 12th’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle between host Harrison and Lafayette Jefferson featured an intriguing coaching match-up.

You see Jeff’s Jan Conner and Harrison’s Christy Flowers are very close friends.  In fact, Flowers is both a former player and assistant of Conner’s.  Flowers, who is a first-year head coach, played two seasons for Conner at Benton Central and then was Conner’s assistant last season at Lafayette Jeff.

This season though has been a difficult one for Flowers and the Raiders.  They entered the game against county rival Lafayette Jeff on a 14-game losing streak.

Conner’s Bronchos gave the Raiders no slack either.  They jumped out to a 24-12 first-quarter lead and then survived a brief Harrison surge in the 4th, to win by a final score of 88-63.

Lafayette Jeff was led by a pair of 24 point scorers in Brandi Richardson and Lacey Roberts.  The two combined to hit 21 free throws in the win over the Raiders.

“Tonight Brandi was in another world,” said Conner.  “I mean not just shooting wise, but in passing wise and seeing the floor and seeing the whole floor.  I mean she was just absolutely unbelievable.”

“What a game for Lacy,” said Conner.  “The points are great; but what I saw was diving on the floor, tying people up.  This is a senior who says I’ve got three more weeks, I’m going to make the best of those three weeks.”

Jeff freshman Breanna Calloway scored a career high 13 points in the win.  The majority of her baskets were the result of spectacular passes from the sophomore point-guard Richardson.

Harrison, which got a team-high 18 points from senior Kristen Martin, cut a 25 point deficit down to 17 with about three minutes remaining.  However, the Bronchos made 10 out of 15 fourth–quarter free throws to close out the Raiders.

Lafayette Jeff, which improved to 8-8 (5-2 HCC), will take on yet another county rival in 3A West Lafayette in its next ballgame on January 15.

Harrison (1-15, 0-6 HCC) will try to snap a 15-game losing streak when they travel to 1A Clinton Prairie (2-12) on January 17th.

Boys Basketball: 4A #7 Lafayette Jeff Defeats Fishers, Improves to 10-1

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – Fishers first-ever boys basketball game at Lafayette Jeff’s Crawley Center on January 11th is one they will soon forget.

The host Bronchos connected on 8 out of 12 first half three-pointer en route to a 49-28 halftime lead.  Jeff would finish the ballgame 12 out of 21 from behind the three-point arc.

Fishers won the second half 41-40.  But it was too little to late, as Lafayette Jeff coasted to an 89-69 victory and improved to 4-0 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference games.

The Bronchos got excellent balanced scoring in their win over the Tigers.  Starters Joe Gamble, Blaine Koger, Broderick Lewis, and Brandon Williams all reached double figures in scoring.  And even though Koger was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points; it was senior Joe Gamble’s 13 point, 4 rebound, 4 steals performance that pleased Jeff coach Scot Bunnell the most.

“I thought Joe Gamble played great,” said Bunnell.  “I thought he was unbelievable.  He just did a good job of passing the ball, he made some good decisions.  I thought Joe by the way he played defensively got us off to a good start and got us going.”

Lafayette Jeff will play the second-half of a double weekend on Saturday January 12th at 9-2 Anderson.  And as you can imagine the match-up with the Indians at the Wigwam was squarely on Bunnell’s radar screen following the win over Fishers.

“We’ve got a tough one tomorrow night,” said Bunnell.  “I don’t know in the three years that I’ve been here other than probably sectional play last year where I’ve walked into the locker-room and really switched gears so quickly like I did tonight.  We said a couple of things about Fishers and then we talked about Anderson; because I think that’s a big one for us and a big test for us going on the road and winning the game.”

Fishers (4-8, 2-3 HCC), which got 16 points and 6 rebounds from senior center Will Madison against the Bronchos also has a double weekend.  And like the Bronchos, they too will face a team from the North Central Conference.  The 8-2 Richmond Red Devils will be the Tigers opponent on Jan. 12 at Fishers.  Both teams will be coming off losses, as Richmond was defeated by Muncie Central 62-48 on January 11th.

Boys Swimming: Zionsville Dominates Lafayette Jeff

By Paul Brown
Contributing Writer

LAFAYETTE – The Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos fell behind early and were never able to mount a comeback.  The visiting Zionsville Eagles won handily 120-56, winning all but four events on January 10th.

The Eagles collected the points for both first and second place finishes in all three relay events.

In the individual events, senior Sam Newcomer won both the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.52) and the 100 yard freestyle (51.13) for Zionsville.  Fellow senior Ryan Connolly also won two events for the Eagles, the 50 yard freestyle (23.97) and the 100 yard butterfly (55.59).

The bright spot in the meet for Lafayette Jeff was Ben Russell, who won the 200 yard individual medley (2:07.36) and also won the 500 yard freestyle (4:54.42).

But the Bronchos fell behind 25 to 5 after two events and were never able to catch up as Zionsville pulled away early and never looked back.

Girls Swimming: Zionsville Tops Lafayette Jeff

By Paul Brown
Contributing Writer

LAFAYETTE – The visiting Zionsville Eagles defeated the Lafayette Jefferson girls swimming and diving team on January 10th by a final score of 102-78 thanks in large part to second and third place finishes.

The Eagles grabbed a 21-9 lead after the first two events, but the Jeff Bronchos came back and held a 38-33 lead after the diving event.  Zionsville pulled away from there and never looked back.

Lafayette Jeff had more individual first place finishes than the Eagles, but Zionsville picked up points for both second and third place finishes in four individual events.  The Eagles also won all three relay events, including third place finishes in all three.

Lafayette Jeff junior Paige Kelsey won both the 50 yard freestyle (25.99) and 100 yard freestyle (55.75).  Freshman Melissa Auckley also won two events for the Bronchos, the 200 yard individual medley (2:16.13) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.58).

The three individual first place finishes for Zionsville were by three different swimmers: sophomore Alex Brennan in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.38), junior MacKenzie Berger in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.67), and sophomore Katie Newcomer in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.73).

GBB: Richardson Cousins’ lead Lafayette Jeff in win over Brownsburg

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Brownsburg – I’m sure many of you can think of an occasion where two sisters have helped lead their team to a big victory.  How about two cousins?

Well, that was exactly what happened during Lafayette Jefferson’s 67-61 victory at Brownsburg on January 5th.

Cousins’ Brandi and Charae Richardson combined to score 49 of their team’s 61 points as Lafayette Jeff overcame an eight point third quarter deficit to get the win.

Brandi Richardson scored 10 of her game-high 25 points in the opening quarter as Jeff assumed a 20-12 lead after one quarter.

But Brownsburg would get itself back into the ballgame with some excellent free throw shooting during the second period.

The Bulldogs were 11 for 11 from the charity stripe during the second quarter, as they grabbed a 30-29 lead at the break.  Indiana all-star candidate Lauren Taylor, who has signed with the University of New Mexico, was responsible for six of those free throws.  For the game, she would connect on all 11 of her free throw attempts.

However, the Bronchos prevented the 6-foot senior guard from making a single field goal in the opening half of play.  And according to Jeff coach Jan Conner, it was a pair of freshmen that were responsible for the defensive effort on Taylor.

“We know Brandi and Charae scored a lot of points,” said Conner.  “But the game balls went to Breanna Calloway and Kayla McCall; because number 11, Lauren Taylor, will be an Indiana all-star.  She didn’t score a single field goal the first half.  Those girls chased her the entire ballgame.”

The third quarter though would be Taylor’s most productive quarter in terms of scoring.  She scored 7 of her team-high 20 points in the third, as the Bulldogs increased their advantage to three points (49-46) after three periods.  Incidentally, Taylor who averages 18 ppg, made her first two field goals of the game during that quarter.

The fourth quarter would see the emergence of the second Richardson cousin, Charae.
The junior guard scored 10 of her 24 points in the fourth, as the Bronchos outscored Brownsburg 21-12 in the quarter to take the win.

Free throw shooting was also pivotal for Lafayette Jeff during the game’s final 8 minutes.  The Bronchos were 14 of 20 from the foul line during the final quarter, helping them reverse a three-point third quarter deficit.

With the win, Lafayette Jeff evened its record to 7-7 for the season.  They also improved to 4-2 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference games.

However, everyone is still chasing Fishers in the league standings.  The Tigers are a perfect 5-0 in league play, with four games left to play.

Brownsburg fell to 5-7 (1-3 HCC) with the loss to the Bronchos.  Its three conference loses though have been by a total of 21 points.

BB: Lafayette Jeff shakes off sluggish start to defeat Zionsville, 85-66

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – 4A #9 Lafayette Jefferson entered its Jan. 4 Hoosier Crossroads Conference game against Zionsville having not played since an 89-45 victory over Kankakee Valley on Dec. 22.

Meanwhile their opponent Zionsville had played a pair of games just six days earlier (Dec. 29) in their own tournament.

And even though the Eagles had dropped both games of that tournament, they clearly looked like the sharper team to start the ballgame against Jeff.  In fact, they led by as many as eight points in the opening quarter, before settling for a 20-15 advantage after the initial eight minutes of play.

Zionsville’s post play keyed its strong start.  6’5” David Smith and 6’4” Michael Tucker combined to score exactly half of the Eagles 20 opening-quarter points.

However, Lafayette Jeff would get its game rolling both offensively and defensively during the game’s second period.  Blaine Koger, Roddy Richardson, and Brandon Williams each connected on three-pointers to ignite the offensive charge.  Then defensively the Bronchos held Zionsville’s post players to just three second-quarter points, as Jeff outscored the Eagles 25-12 to grab a 40-32 halftime advantage.

Williams then took control of the game for the host Bronchos in the third.  The junior point guard lit up the Crawley Center scoreboard by making seven two-point field goals as Jeff increased its lead to 20 before settling for a 64-48 advantage to start the fourth.

Williams, who scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second and third quarters, also had a game-high four steals defensively.

“We started running some iso stuff for him (Williams) and he just took advantage of it,” said Jeff coach Scott Bunnell.  “He got it going and he felt good and he was making shots.  You know it all starts with him defensively, he seems to always get the big steal for you and kind of break their back a little bit.”

Zionsville, which got a team-high 16 points from sophomore Jack Isenbarger, did manage to cut the deficit to ten points during one stage of the fourth quarter.  However, Jeff responded by making 11 of 14 fourth-quarter free throws to defeat the Eagles 85-66.

And while Bunnell was happy to see his Bronchos improve to 3-0 in HCC play, he wasn’t particular pleased though with some of the lapses his team had defensively against Zionsville.

“I just didn’t think we had great concentration defensively to start the game,” said Bunnell.  And then we got the big lead there in the fourth, I thought we lost our concentration defensively a little bit there too.  When we’ve been really good, we’ve been good defensively.”

Ironically, Zionsville coach Shaun Busick agreed somewhat with Bunnell’s assessment.

“Even at the fourth quarter when we were down 16 I never felt like we were out of the game,” said Busick.  I felt like they would let us right back in the game and they did.  I think they are a good basketball team, a very solid basketball team, but as coach Bunnell would tell you they’ve got a lot to work on as well.”

Zionsville, which dropped to 4-6 (1-3 HCC) with the loss, saw the return of its leading scorer in Sean Haseley (15 ppg) against the Bronchos.  The senior forward suffered a high-ankle sprain in the team’s loss to Kankakee Valley in the opening game of the Zionsville Tournament on December 29th.  He then missed the consolation game of the tournament, a 66-54 setback to Lafayette Central Catholic.  However, he returned to the floor against Jeff in a non-starting role and scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Eagles won’t have much time to rest either as it’s a double weekend for them.  They will travel to take-on Guerin Catholic Saturday night (Jan. 5).

“We’re a team looking for a win,” said Busick.  “We’ve had some tough losses, but we continue to have a good attitude and work hard in practice.  I can’t really complain about my kids, they are great kids.”

Lafayette Jeff, which also got 21 points from senior Blaine Koger, will have a full week off before hosting Fishers on January 11th.  The Bronchos (9-1, 3-0 HCC) will then embark on an NBA-type schedule with four games in eight days.

One additional note on the Bronchos; senior Timmy Fogarty played his first game of the season against Zionsville, after rupturing his achilles tendon during the football season.
