Girls Cross Country: Hoosier Crossroads Conference Preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

To nobody’s surprise, Westfield won both conference and state titles last season in convincing fashion. For coach Scott Lidskin’s Shamrocks, it was their third consecutive state title.

Now, Westfield did lose two outstanding runners to graduation in Maggie Bingham (4th at state meet in ’07) and Breanne Ehrman (40th at state meet ’07).

Then, during the week of August 10, the Shamrocks learned that super sophomore Waverly Neer would be transferring to Culver Academies.

However, coach Lidskin has built a monster of program at Westfield which includes lots and lots of depth. Thus, the Shamrocks still must be considered the favorite to win the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title in 2008.

But Noblesville, which finished second at last year’s conference meet, returns five of its top seven runners. Therefore, the Millers quite possibly could be a team that finds a way to pull off an upset of Westfield at this year’s conference meet.

On the individual front, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference will crown a new champion in 2008. Last year’s individual champion, Lorna Whaley of Avon, graduated and is now running collegiately at Louisville.

The two likely candidates to succeed Whaley as the conference’s individual champion were to have both been from Westfield.

However, Neer, who finished 23rd at last year’s state cross country meet, has transferred.

Therefore, Shamrock senior Kaitlyn Love has to be considered the favorite to win the 2008 individual title.

As a junior, Love finished runner-up to Whaley at the conference meet, and then went on to record an eighth place finish at the state meet.

In coaching news, there was one coaching change that took place in the conference during the off-season. It happened at Fishers, where Rob Seymour stepped down as head coach of both the boys and girls teams. Beth Jahns was then hired to succeed Seymour as the girls cross country coach of the Tigers.

Here’s a capsule preview of all 10 Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls cross country teams. The 2008 HCC cross country meet is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 at White River Elementary School in Noblesville. (Note: teams are listed in order of their finishing position at the 2007 conference meet)

2007 State Tournament: Carmel Sectional-4th, Brebeuf Regional-7th

Maria McGraw-SO (McCutcheon transfer, 20:30)
Rebecca Woolf –SR (21:17)
Liz Neel-SR (21:25)
Molly Maher-SO (21:48)
2008 Outlook: “We have considerable work to do to make up for the graduation of Katie Conrad, Kara Conflenti, and Lisa Deng. Katie and Kara were typically our top two runners, while Lisa spent a lot of time among our top 5. All three were among the best leaders our program has seen. Current senior Calesse Cardosi and McCutcheon transfer Maria McGraw, a sophomore, have both made significant improvements since last year and should be front-runners in many of our meets. We have quite a gap between them and the rest of our varsity though, so we will need quite a few runners to step up if we are to experience the level of competition we have in the last couple of seasons.” – Zionsville coach Doug Showley

McCutcheon
Coach: Larry Boener
2007 HCC Meet: 4th place

Key graduation losses: Lisa Strueh, Allie McGraw

2008 Outlook: “This will be a rebuilding year as we lost a large number of runners to graduation and relocation. Currently, we only have nine runners on the roster, compared to fifteen on last year’s squad, which finished eighth in the New Prairie Semistate and 4th in the talented HCC Championship Meet. We hope to see some of our non-lettering veterans and newcomers
step up and fill some of the gaps and make another run to the semistate meet.” – McCutcheon coach Larry Boener

2008 Outlook: “The Fishers girls have a very young team again this year.  We have several returning sophomores as well as a few new faces to the team who could prove to be quite competitive with the rest of the conference.  Our hope is to improve our overall record, our placing in HCC, as well as a farther run towards the State finals meet.” – Fishers coach Beth Jahns

Katie Sly-SR (21:00)

Returning varsity runners: 4
Top runners:
Leiona Noah-JR
Jenna Myers-SR
Becca Widau-SR
2008 Outlook: “After losing Lorna Whaley, Sara Lucas and Lauren Widau, we will need our entire team to make vast improvements if we are to match last season’s Franklin Central Semistate appearance.  We expect our team to work hard and have fun with each other while striving towards the common goals of individual improvements in times and team improvements with placing in invites and post-season meets.  We expect to be doing our best racing when it counts…sectionals and beyond.” – Avon coach Brad Rosebrock

Kristen Rush-SR (20:15)
Maddie Webster-SO (20:14)
Megan Moser-SR (20:44)
2008 Outlook: “The girls look to be much improved from last year’s squad that was regional runner-up and semistate finalist. The team lost its number one runner due to graduation, but three or four really strong freshman could make this the best Brownsburg team since the days of Julie Shields and Heather Cooksey.” – Brownsburg coach Bret Neylon

Key regular season meets:

9/6: Harrison (West Lafayette) Invitational @ the Tippecanoe Ampitheater (Avon/Fishers/Harrison/Lafayette Jeff/McCutcheon/Zionsville)
9/20: FlashRock Invitational @ Northview Christian Church in Carmel (Avon/Brownsburg/Fishers/Hamilton Southeastern/Lafayette Jeff/Noblesville/Westfield/Zionsville)
10/4: Hoosier Crossroads Conference Meet @ White River Elementary School in Noblesville

2008 Conference Overview

“Westfield, despite graduating Maggie Bingham and Breanne Ehrman will still be a top team in the state.  If Noblesville, with the Bowles sisters, Cange, and Foley, can stay healthy; they have a great group of both young and experienced athletes and could possibly place again in the state championship. The HCC, is in my opinion, the toughest top to bottom girls cross country conference in the state (no offense to Conference Indiana, the DAC (Duneland), and the MIC (Metropolitan).” – Avon coach Brad Rosebrock

“This year’s conference may not be as dominant as in years past as some of the top teams have lost athletes to graduation. I would see Noblesville or Zionsville as a threat to topple Westfield this year, but then Coach Lidskin always seems to have his girls ready, regardless of how many he graduated from the year before. I would see those as the top three teams at this point.” – McCutcheon coach Larry Boener

“Westfield, once again, will be the top team in the conference. Noblesville looks to benefit from
another batch of incoming freshmen and should be a solid second.” – Zionsville coach Doug Showley

GG: Tiebreaker lifts #2 Martinsville past #7 Avon at Trojan Classic

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

FRANKLIN – There are two reasons why Center Grove’s annual Trojan Classic attracts such a large girls golf field each year.

First, it is an opportunity for Indiana’s top teams to get an early measuring of how they stack up against their chief rivals. Second, and more importantly, it is an opportunity to play The Legends of Indiana course in Franklin, site of the state finals in October.

This year, 21 teams competed. In the end, it was some familiar names at the top of the leaderboard. (Click here to watch an interview with Hamilton Southeastern coach Steve Guenin and Royals’ No. 1 player Autumn Duke, who shot a 76. And stay tuned for more video interviews!)

Second-ranked Martinsville took team honors in a fourth-player score tiebreaker with No. 7 Avon after each squad scorched the course with 315s. Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern was third, a scant three shots back at 318.

But in this field featuring a dozen of the state’s highest-ranked programs, the top three certainly did not run away from the pack. No. 4 Richmond and No. 12 Carmel both posted 320s, and third-ranked Columbus North registered a 322.

It should be noted that the Bull Dogs suffered two individual holes that seriously dented their score, including one devastating 15. Overall, however, they were as strong as any team in the field.

Even Northern Indiana was well-represented at The Legends by No. 10 Penn, which carded a 327.

“This was a field of 12 of the Top 14 teams in the state,” said Carmel coach Ken Kelly. “To have three girls play their personal best and a solid fourth score and be five shots from the first- and second-ranked teams in the state …

“WOW. That’s a great day.”

The highlight of the day came in the chase for medalist honors. Columbus North’s Taylor Gohn staked her claim to being the state’s best by carding a sizzling 68. And no, folks, that is not a misprint.

It also was barely good enough. Carmel’s Ari Savich was right behind at 69, while three more players – Breanna Patz of Avon and the Noblesville duo of Meghan Potee and Emily Podzielinski – posted 72s.

In all, nearly a dozen golfers finished below 80 on the day.

It’s early in the season, but there are some things that can be taken from Monday’s event.

Martinsville and Hamilton Southeastern showed it is their depth that sets them apart. Columbus North, No. 6 Noblesville, and Carmel continued to show they are as good or better than anybody at the top of the lineup.

But perhaps the subtle stories on this day came from Richmond and fifth-ranked Roncalli.

The 320 posted by the Red Devils was very quiet, yet very consistent. Meanwhile, Roncalli tallied a 333, the same score the Rebels shot last week at Foxcliff in the Artie Invitational at Martinsville. It is obvious they are a team that is always going to be lurking near the top.

Only one more major invitational remains before the start of school and the shortening of most matches to nine holes. That is the Hall of Fame Classic to be hosted by Richmond Aug. 30 at Forest Hills.

Boys Soccer: Hoosier Crossroads Conference Preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

The Hoosier Crossroads Conference has been and likely will continue to be one of the best conference’s in the state for boys soccer.

This was never more evident than last season when six conference schools obtained a top-20 ranking during week five of the 2007 season. In addition, six schools went on to claim sectional titles.

Brownsburg captured the conference crown last season with a record of 7-0-2, but graduated their top six goal scorers in addition to their assists leader and goal keeper. Thus when the 2008 season begins on August 18, the race to determine this year’s conference champion appears to be wide open.

In coaching news, there were two coaching changes that occurred in the off-season. Jason Klingerman takes over for Pete Kapsalis at Fishers, and at Harrison Chris Castro replaces Ron Brown.

Here is a capsule preview of all ten conference schools (teams are listed in order of their finish in the 2007 conference standings)

Expectations will be higher and the goals set higher as well. The team’s immediate goals are to win a conference championship and to advance further than our 2007 regional final exit on penalties to North Central. The senior leadership from Brad Schafer, Eric Goddard, Matt Jordan, Dylan King, Kyle Schoen, Cory Eads, and Zach Muchow has created a hard working and dedicated group of athletes. The talent in the junior and sophomore classes is evident and deep. The team has an improved schedule that will be one of the best in the state with many top ranked teams including non-conference foes Lawrence Central, Pike, Washington, Ben Davis, and Center Grove. This challenging schedule should properly prepare the team for post-season play and make the team the best they can be.” – Avon coach Phil Schmidt

2008 Outlook: “The McCutcheon soccer team this season will be made up of a strong group of players that have been playing together for many years. This group of young men, which doesn’t have a lot of varsity experience, has shown an amazing ability to play as a team, demonstrated excellent ball movement, strong judgment, and field sense beyond their experience level. A sectional title is well within our reach when you consider the understanding of the game that this year’s McCutcheon soccer team possesses.” – McCutcheon coach Mike Etzkorn

2008 Conference Overview
“The HCC is obviously one of the most competitive conferences in the state. Many players have been able to benefit from good coaching at some of Indiana’s top club teams in the area. Two or three teams from our conference are likely state contenders such as Noblesville and Zionsville. It’s hard to say which team will go the distance, but I’ll predict Zionsville.” – Fishers coach Jason Klingerman

“I strongly believe the HCC is the strongest conference top to bottom in the state. The conference is littered with exceptional talent. The annual classic battles between us (Westfield) and teams like Zionsville, Noblesville, Brownsburg, and Avon are sure to be bigger and better with this class of players and coaches. I expect at some point this year to see at least 6 of our 10 teams ranked in the same poll.” – Westfield Coach Myron Vaughn

“The HCC is the toughest conference in the state in my opinion. There are so many quality teams each and every night one team can defeat the other. Westfield, Avon, and Noblesville look to be the front runners in the conference this year.” – Zionsville coach Mike Smith

Girls Soccer: Hoosier Crossroads Conference Preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Coordinator

In 2007 the Noblesville Millers captured the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title in girls soccer in a very tight battle with both Zionsville and Brownsburg.

In fact, Zionsville went undefeated in conference games and finished with a 6-0-3 conference mark. However, the Millers which finished at 8-1, won the title based on the conference’s points system, 24 to 21. That system, awards three points for a win and just one for a tie.

Brownsburg finished in third place in the conference standings last season with 20 points; but went further than any other conference school in the state tournament, making it all the way to the championship game of the North Central (Indianapolis) Semistate.

In 2008, look for Noblesville, Zionsville, and Brownsburg to once again vie for the conference title, as each return a significant number of starters.

Noblesville and Brownsburg each have eight starters back and Zionsville returns six.

However, Zionsville’s players will have to adjust to a new coaching staff this season. Mike Beckner stepped down as head coach of the Eagles in the offseason and was replaced by Ramon Aguillon. Ramon though, appears to have done a nice job of beginning to develop a positive connection with his players during the offseason. In fact, the building of team leadership skills has been particularly stressed. One of the things the team participated in this offseason to help build leadership skills was to conduct a free soccer camp for underprivileged Latino kids.

In other off-season coaching moves, Rich Miotke was named the new girls soccer coach at Lafayette Jefferson, replacing Laura Poland.

Here’s a capsule team preview of all 10 conference teams, as the new season gets set to begin on August 18. (teams are listed in order of their finish in the 2007 conference standings)

2008 Conference Overview

“The HCC is one of the toughest conferences in the state if not the toughest. I wouldn’t be surprised if the HCC had anywhere from 5-7 teams ranked in the top 20 to start the season.  Some of the top teams in the HCC should be Noblesville, Zionsville, Brownsburg and Westfield with Fishers, HSE and Avon not far behind.  Harrison, McCutcheon and Lafayette Jeff are competitive each year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see those teams make some noise this year.” – Avon coach Brian Holmer

“Top to bottom the HCC is one of the top 2 or 3 conferences in the state for girls soccer. After the top 3 or 4 teams, everyone else is fairly even. I truly feel every game is important, as any team in our conference could beat another team on a given night.  That is why it is so important to coach smart soccer with emphasis on team defense, smart attacking, and most importantly, limiting your mistakes as a team.” – Lafayette Jefferson coach Rich Miotke

“The HCC is one of the top conferences in the state, teams like Noblesville, Westfield, and Avon will be very tough to beat. We expect this season to be a very competitive one in our conference. Any team can beat anyone on any given day.” – Zionsville coach Ramon Aguillon

Volleyball: Lafayette Jefferson team preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Coordinator

Lafayette Jefferson head coach Gail Gripe begins her 27th consecutive season of coaching the Bronchos hoping to put an end to a rough two-year run which has seen the program win just 1 of 18 conference matches.

The 2008 Bronchos though will be a team that has virtually no varsity experience. In fact, they return just two starters in junior middle hitter Ebony Fondren and sophomore outside hitter Bre Calloway.

However, a change that coach Gripe made with her coaching staff in the off-season might very well help smooth the learning curve that many of the girls will undoubtedly have as they play their first varsity level matches.

Scott Graves, who was the Bronchos junior varsity coach last season and prior to that the freshman coach, is now coach Gripe’s top varsity assistant. Graves, who played for Gail on the boys’ team at Jeff, has coached nearly every girl on the Bronchos varsity roster at some level.

Here’s a capsule look at the 2008 Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos
Coach: Gail Gripe
2007 Record: overall: 5-35, 0-9 HCC (10th place)
2007 State Tournament: Lost to McCutcheon 3-0 in the semifinals of the McCutcheon Sectional
Returning Starters: 2
Top Players:
Ebony Fondren-JR, MH (69 kills and 16 solo blocks last season)
Jaime Witeveen-JR, S (transfer from Lafayette Central Catholic)
Ginelle Griswell-JR, OH
Morgan Riley-SO, OH/MH (played nationally for a club team during the summer)
Tiffany Walls-JR
2008 Outlook: “The younger kids are kind of sparking us right now. We’ve had some kids who really improved in the off-season, and we’ve been really impressed at the way they have come into tryouts.” – Lafayette Jefferson coach Gail Gripe

First day of a new season

Courtesy of the “Lafayette Journal and Courier”

By MIKE CARMIN
mcarmin@journalandcourier.com

After more than 30
years, the excitement of starting the high school sports season hasn’t
wavered for Lafayette Jeff volleyball coach Gail Gripe.

“Scott
Graves, our varsity assistant, asked if I slept at all (Sunday) night,”
Gripe said Monday following the Bronchos’ first workout. “I was up and
down, knowing that (Monday) was the first day.

“After
30 something years, I still do get excited about starting the season.
It’s that new beginning, the new kids and seeing how they work out.”

For Broncho setter Sydney Walls, the first practice brought plenty of anxiety.

“I’m
really nervous. Extremely nervous,” the junior said. “This is tryouts.
It’s nerve-wracking to know what team you’re going to make.”

Although
the Indiana High School Athletic Association has allowed coaches more
freedom to work with players in the summer, the first official day of
practice is still special.

“The
first day of high school practice is a lot of fun,” West Lafayette
goalkeeper Jessica Gwin said. “The high school atmosphere is a lot
different than the club atmosphere; there’s a lot of pride in school
spirit.”

Gwin and
her Red Devil teammates are hopeful that spirit equals another deep run
in the state tournament. WL lost to Fort Wayne Dwenger in last year’s
semistate championship but believes it can go one step further this
season.

That experience should make the preseason practices go smoothly.

“We
pretty much have a good feel for where a lot of the players are going
to be,” WL second-year coach James Hunter said. “It makes it a lot
easier knowing what we have to do going into these two-a-days.

“We
don’t have to spend as much time on conditioning. They’ve been working
out and had some modified two-a-days throughout the summer.”

Some players are getting used to new coaches, including Central Catholic’s football program.

Kevin
O’Shea, who begins his first season with the Knights after one year at
Attica, is happy the IHSAA altered its summer rules.

“It’s
given us an opportunity to work ahead and come outside and work with
our kids and implement the system,” O’Shea said. “If this would’ve been
10 years ago, this first day would’ve been heck. We would have started
from scratch.”

CC quarterback Chris Mills said O’Shea’s offense is similar to last year’s system run by now-Lafayette Jeff coach Andy Kennedy.

“It’s
basically the same offense as last year but with some different
formations,” Mills said. “The summer practices helped a lot because we
got our timing down with receivers.”

It’s
at least two weeks until football, boys and girls soccer, volleyball,
cross country and boys tennis teams start competition. Gripe is one
coach who will be closely watching her team’s progress.

“Now,
everything you have done counts,” she said. “All the work that you put
in or haven’t. All the time you have pushed yourself or haven’t. What
you do on the court from now on and how you compete in everything
counts.”
