Volleyball: Lafayette Jefferson defeats county rival McCutcheon

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – Lafayette Jefferson’s youth stepped to the forefront during the team’s 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, and 25-19 victory over Tippecanoe County and Hoosier Crossroads Conference rival McCutcheon on September 4 at the Crawley Center.

The Bronchos, which have only one senior on their roster, received a combined 29 kills from outside hitters sophomore Bre Calloway and junior Sydney Walls in downing the Mavericks in four games.

Calloway led the team in kills in with 17 and Walls added 12, as Lafayette Jeff snapped a 12-match conference losing streak which dated back to October of 2006.

Junior setter Jamie Witteveen, who totaled 36 assists on the evening, did a beautiful job of continuously sending the ball out on the perimeter for both Calloway and Walls to hit.

The Bronchos (2-8, 1-2 HCC) trailed just briefly during the opening two games of the match winning them by seven and six points respectively.

However, the Mavericks were equally as impressive during the third game, winning by a score of 25-18 to avoid being swept in three games.

Lafayette Jeff then regained its momentum in game four, jumping to a 20-12 lead before McCutcheon made one last push in an attempt to send the game to a fifth and decisive game.

Trailing by eight points at 20 to 12 in the fourth game, the Mavericks twice got within two points of the Bronchos at 20-18 and 21-19.

However, Lafayette Jeff’s 27-year head coach, Gail Gripe, called a pair of timeouts to try and stop McCutcheon’s momentum.

The second timeout worked, as Gripe’s Bronchos scored the final four points of the game after leading 21-19 to close out the Mavericks 25-19.

Lafayette Jeff, which snapped an eight match losing streak, will return to the court on September 11 when they travel to Noblesville for another HCC match.

McCutcheon (3-6, 0-3 HCC), which got a team-high 13 kills from senior Meg Teller against the Bronchos, will next be in action on September 9 when they travel to Lafayette Central Catholic for a non-conference match.
